Daniel met Charles in an interrogation room. It was a spring day, flowers in full bloom. Charles broke off a branch with a bud from beside the window, handed it to him, and said, "I believe you."
He was the only light in Daniel's darkness.
Not long afterward, at a horse-racing club, Charles sat down across from Daniel. "Can I take you out tonight?"
The atmosphere was perfect. It was just a casual conversation, but Daniel fell in love with this senior superintendent, a man with a witty tongue and elegant manners.
Later, Daniel handed in his resignation and applied to join the joint intelligence agency where Charles worked. On his first day, he opened the director's office door. Amid the haze of smoke, the person he had longed for stubbed out his cigarette and asked, his golden eyes looking impatient, "Who are you?"
Daniel: "..."
It was bad enough that his feelings were unrequited. Now he had to be worked to the bone, too. His boss, a pretty face with nothing behind it, even tried to undermine him, saying, "You're not cut out for this place."
All right, then. Lesson one at the intelligence agency: trust no one.
