The lights in the Corner bar were set just right: dim enough, but still bright enough to see everyone's face. Alex looked at Fang Huaixiu, who was already a little tipsy. He had planned to end the evening and take him home early, but the question on his mind remained unanswered, and he was still curious.
"Martin told me you hadn't dated anyone before you got together. So how come he wasn't your first love?"
Fang Huaixiu's mind was foggy, but he could still speak clearly. "That's different."
"How is it different? Was it someone back in China? That can't be right. You never said you'd dated anyone back home."
"We weren't lovers. We never got together!" Irritated by the questions, Fang Huaixiu stood up to leave. Alex hurried to pay and followed, steadying him. "Alex, you don't understand. We... actually loved each other very much."
"Then why didn't you get together?" Alex had grown up abroad. He really didn't understand this. If you liked someone, you should do whatever it took to get them.
Alex was holding Fang Huaixiu up. His head was growing heavier, and his words were beginning to slur. He felt awful, as if all the alcohol he'd drunk were stuck in his chest.
Right. Why hadn't they gotten together?
"Maybe because he was a coward."
