Lost in the Evening Star

[Next up: "Brown Sugar and Strong Liquor" / "Hidden Away". Please add them to your reading list.] At a friend's birthday party, Xu Jinghuai saw Wen Ning again. The girl was gentle and radiant, as pure as water and out of place among the crowd. Xu Jinghuai couldn't take his eyes off her. Everyone knew Xu Jinghuai was refined, elegant, and powerful. No one knew just how intense the obsession beneath his polished exterior was. His friend saw what was on his mind and warned him, "The girl has a boyfriend." Xu Jinghuai didn't care. He swirled his wineglass, confident he had everything under control. "They'll break up soon." Before long, Wen Ning's boyfriend's personality changed completely. He yelled at her during an argument. "How am I any different from a single guy? If you won't let me touch you, we might as well end it." Wen Ning was heartbroken and went to a friend to cry. As it happened, Xu Jinghuai was there, too. He offered her a tissue with his slender, pale hand. "You'll meet someone better." She choked back a sob, sounding a little regretful. "But he was my first love." Xu Jinghuai looked up and studied Wen Ning with interest. "If he was your first love, then what was our kiss?" Later, Wen Ning finally remembered the night she'd first met Xu Jinghuai, several months earlier.
