Hua Wu transmigrates into the role of the female lead's foil, a cannon-fodder side character. Her sect leader and master scolds her, her senior sister bullies her, and her senior brother despises her. To stay alive, she starts trying to win over Gu Yan, her aloof, reclusive great-uncle martial ancestor. He is as pure as the moonlight, the ideal man in every way. She pursues him boldly, sending him gifts and flowers and looking after him devotedly, laying her unguarded girlish heart before him. Unfortunately, this lofty deity is entirely devoted to the path of cultivation and knows nothing of love.
Just as Hua Wu is wondering how to press on, her junior brother comes over. "My lord, I know you have a twisted streak, but we've been undercover for so long. When are we going to wipe out the sect?"
Hua Wu: "What?"
Her junior brother: "That wolf clan heir you tricked by playing a frail young girl last time is still locked up in the dungeon. You also said that when you saw Gu Yan, he was like frost and moonlight, and that you'd lock him away in your bedchamber too."
His reminder brings the second half of the book back to Hua Wu. She isn't a cannon-fodder side character at all. She's actually the world-ending villain who will bring chaos to the world.
Her junior brother says mournfully, "Could it be that my lord really fell for Gu Yan and plans to mend her ways?"
Mend my ways? Not a chance. If you can be the boss, why bother with a lousy man? Hua Wu waves her hand. "Call the brothers over. Let's get this party started."

Gu Yan is devoted to the path of cultivation, untouched by passion or desire. But the junior girl in the sect is always following quietly behind him. When the weather turns cold, she chops wood for him. When it gets hot, she brings him a bowl of chilled plum soup. When he goes into seclusion, she waits outside his door. When he enters a secret realm, she gives him all her possessions.
Day after day, night after night, she clings to him until he finds her annoying, yet gradually grows accustomed to her presence.
Until one day, the usually delicate and obedient girl changes completely. Holding the wolf clan heir's hand, she leads a great host of demonic cultivators, stepping over his useless nephew, the sect leader, with dazzling arrogance.
Only then does he realize that she had been playing all along and had never truly cared for him. His heart, usually still as an ancient well, suddenly aches. The feelings he had repressed for so long surge over him like a tide, and when he sees the red marks on the wolf clan heir's wrist, endless jealousy wells up inside him.
