Ling'er is the little princess of the Dragon Clan, but she is slow-witted and knows nothing about water magic. When she was young, she nearly burned to death in a sea of flames, but a young man saved her.
Facing the handsome boy before her, Ling'er's heart pounded. Then, embarrassed that she, a member of the Dragon Clan, had been trapped by a forest fire, her face turned red.
Overcome with shame, she pretended that her magic had failed and transformed into a little azure dragon curled in the boy's palm, following him back to the Eastern Sea.
Later, Ling'er learned that he was Yun Yao, the exceptionally talented young general of the Heavenly Realm, undefeated in battle.
She secretly fell for him even as she kept thinking about how to repay him.
On his way back to the Heavenly Realm, Yun Yao glimpsed the Nine Heavens Divine Flame blazing fiercely. Only someone who possessed the Spiritfire Pearl could wield it, but the pearl had been missing for a thousand years.
He found no trace of the Spiritfire Pearl in the sea of flames, but unexpectedly saved a little azure dragon.
The dragon's tail, revealed beneath the young woman's gauzy skirt when her magic ran out, shimmered with an azure light. It was so beautiful that he found himself staring.
When he noticed the young woman's embarrassed expression, he realized he had been rude. He quickly hid the blush on his face and said calmly, "I'll take you home."
When they parted, Yun Yao wanted to ask her name, but before he could say a word, she dove into the sea and disappeared. He could only smile helplessly.
Years later, during the war between the Heavenly Realm and the demons, he was outmatched by the demonic sword in his enemy's hand, forged by refining an ancient fierce beast.
At the critical moment, the little azure dragon appeared again and attached herself to his sword.
The war lasted a hundred days, and the two were together day and night.
The little azure dragon only dared to appear and sneak a look at him while he rested, so he would pretend to be asleep to make her show herself.
As they spent more time together, she occasionally dared to tease him. She would quietly tend his wounds and even secretly stroke his brow.
At the decisive battle, Yun Yao swung his sword and unleashed the Nine Heavens Divine Flame across the battlefield. Only then did he realize that the Spiritfire Pearl, missing for a hundred years, was in the little azure dragon's possession.
With the Spiritfire restored, the Heavenly Emperor demanded answers, and Yun Yao was accused of stealing it.
"In view of your contributions to repelling the demons, your merits will offset your crime. Hand over the Spiritfire Pearl, and you will be spared punishment."
Stealing a sacred relic was punishable by heavenly thunder. She had only cultivated for a hundred years and would never survive the punishment. Unable to bear turning her in, Yun Yao remained silent.
"Where is the Spiritfire Pearl?"
"This general does not know."
Bonus scene:
Ling'er happened to hear Yun Yao call out a name in his sleep: Xiao Qing.
Even after all the time they had spent together, Yun Yao had never asked her name.
Ling'er's heart turned bitter, and she quietly retreated into the sword.
The demons were defeated, and she had repaid her debt. There was no reason to stay by his side, so she wisely left.
As they parted, Ling'er gathered her courage and asked him:
"Is Xiao Qing... the one you love?"
A faint blush appeared on the face of the decisive God of War.
"...Yes."
