The Prince of Shu had two sons, twins.
The elder was born with teeth, and was known as the Demon Child.
The younger had a mole between his brows and was a famously young general.
In the autumn of Jingli's twenty-third year, the border was under threat and the treasury was running dry. The Prince of Shu, tasked with raising funds, turned his attention to Yangzhou.
The wealthiest family, the Shen family, was the first to be approached. They agreed to donate money, but made one condition: their daughter had to marry into the prince's household as the principal wife.
Before the meeting, the Prince of Shu summoned his son and gave him instructions.
"When you go to the Shen residence today, keep your eyes open. Choose the most obedient, proper, and youngest girl. That way, after your mother teaches her for two years, she won't bring the vulgar airs of a merchant family down upon the household's reputation."
At the same time, Concubine Xue took the opportunity while helping her daughter get ready to offer her own advice.
"Wu Wu! You hurt your head before, so you can't handle political scheming. You're cute, so you look easy to bully. You're also young, which won't help with producing heirs. This meeting is just a formality. Eat well and enjoy yourself."
Both children agreed.
Then the choice fell on Shen Yujian after all.
The Prince of Shu was exasperated. "I told you to choose a girl, not a fool! Didn't you know Shen Yujian hit her head? Forget it, forget it. Let your older brother marry her!"
Concubine Xue was just as angry. "Is Wei Huaian blind? A wife should be chosen for her virtue. Apart from being rich, what can Wu Wu offer him? Forget it, forget it. At least it's the second son who's marrying her, so we haven't lost out."
And so, after the six betrothal gifts had been delivered, Shen Yujian traveled north to marry.
That night, red silk filled the room and candlelight glowed bright.
Shen Yujian looked up innocently and called out sweetly with a smile, "Husband."
But her husband wore a headband that covered the red mole on his forehead. He was silent, and his gaze was strange. He seemed unlike the cheerful, carefree man who had talked so freely when they first met in Yangzhou.
Before she could think much of it, he gave a quiet "Mm."
After the wedding, she met his parents, who treated her with great affection.
They said she had traveled a long way and needed time to get used to the local customs and build a relationship with her husband, so she needn't go out unless she had to.
Shen Yujian felt blissfully happy, but the man accompanying her scoffed. "Are you stupid?"
Even later, she never understood why he had said that.
Then, when the spring flowers bloomed, Shen Yujian went out to admire the scenery.
Suddenly, a man jumped over the wall. He had a red mole between his brows.
When he saw her, he looked surprised for a moment, then nervously bowed. "Sister-in-law..."
Shen Yujian fled in a panic. Back in her room, she removed her husband's headband. The moment she saw there was nothing beneath it, she finally understood.
At the meeting, she had been introduced to the second son. But now she was married to the elder brother, the Demon Child.
Shen Yujian was so frightened that she began to cry, but Wei Huaixu wiped her tears away, smiling with delight.
"You finally figured it out! Why are you crying? Are you scared? Was I really that bad at imitating Wei Huaian?"
