Shen Bugui has a strange buff: the Grim Lantern attribute.
Wherever he stays, businesses go bankrupt and shut down, places turn into living hells, or the harvest fails and floods break out.
When he was ten, he lit a fire at home. The flames spread for ten miles, and the entire village nearly burned to the ground.
When he was sixteen, he went to the imperial palace of an enemy nation. The enemy country fell into rebellion and nearly changed dynasties.
When he was eighteen, he had no one in the world and could only survive by begging.
When he was twenty, he decided to break free of his fate. So he joined a corrupt, unscrupulous sect, where he was exploited every day, shunned, treated with contempt, and stripped of his spiritual root--
Shen Bugui was confused.
Why?
Had they found out he liked sour bamboo shoots?! (Gasp!)
Then...
The water that had been dry for centuries in front of the sect suddenly surged into the courtyard and flooded seven thousand steps, while tribulation lightning swirled overhead. The spirit stones that had protected the sect for thousands of years burst apart, and beasts howled mournfully for nine days straight.
The sect's buildings collapsed overnight.
On the day the corrupt sect was reduced to rubble, the Grand Elder finally understood. He walked shakily over to Shen Bugui. "Little Bugui, would you be willing to go to the Demon Realm and slay demons to protect humanity?"
Shen Bugui beamed. "Of course!"
Not even a moment was spent mourning the corrupt sect's ruin. The one heading straight for the battlefield next was ( ).

The cold-hearted Sword Venerable, unable to find a worthy opponent, planned to take his young attendant and spend two hundred years in seclusion inside a secret-realm cave.
But in the eighteenth year, Shen Bugui barged in.
The young attendant poured out his woes to Shen Bugui. "Listen, the Sword Venerable may seem refined and noble, but he's really awful! He assigns me homework every day and forbids me from doing this and that. He even tries to control what I eat... I'm just his attendant! I can't imagine how controlling he'll be toward his future wife!"
Shen Bugui laughed along, feeling a subtle envy, but before he could reply,
he saw the Sword Venerable, who had been meditating, suddenly open his eyes. A heavy gaze, almost tangible, pressed down on Shen Bugui's spine.
A moment later, that gaze turned away. The Sword Venerable closed his eyes again and said coolly,
"If the child is too young to know better, then naturally he should be disciplined more strictly."
A few notes for readers: (Perhaps these are also points to be wary of.)
An extremely, ridiculously older top, with an age gap of several hundred years. The bottom is the kind the top delivered himself (yeah).
Although the top seems very proper, he's actually quite cheerful and has a deadpan sense of humor (looks away).
Half plot, half romance, with a chuuni vibe. My fate is mine to command, not Heaven's!
Theme: The dragon-slayer will eventually be slain by another
