The day Xu Yang first arrived in Lin'an, a sudden downpour caught her by surprise.
She ran beneath a covered walkway for shelter. The air was damp, the ground wet, and no one was around except for an old half-immortal fortune-teller, hunched over and dozing in the corner.
An idea came to Xu Yang. She scooped up some rainwater and poured it into the inkstone, hitched up her robe, and sat down at the fortune-teller's stall. She ground the ink, spread out the paper, and wrote the character "Yang."
"Fortune-teller, I would like you to divine the meaning of this character."
The old half-immortal lifted one eyelid and glanced at the paper. Then she raised the corner of her eye, smiling faintly.
"Water beside the sound 'yang': the waters will engulf the imperial city."
