The Reluctant General's Wife

Jia Niang of the Loyal and Brave Marquis's estate was born to wealth and status, beautiful and beloved by her entire family. Her fiance was a young general, making her the envy of noblewomen and well-bred young ladies across the capital.

Then the tide of fortune turned. The emperor died, the crown prince was killed, and Jia Niang's fiance fell on the battlefield. To everyone's surprise, the Sixth Prince, who had been living in a remote border region, took the throne.

Jia Niang wept bitterly and decided she never wanted to marry in this life.

Mo Shaolang was born into poverty, with barely a roof over his head, but had a great talent for martial arts. By chance, he joined the Sixth Prince's ranks.

Then the tide of fortune turned. Mo Shaolang rode a fine horse and wielded a silver spear, killing his way through rivers of blood to escort the Sixth Prince into the capital. He ascended the throne, and Mo Shaolang became the new emperor's trusted general.

The best way to unite the old noble houses and the emperor's new supporters was through marriage alliances.

The new emperor waved a hand and told Mo Shaolang to choose from among all the noble young ladies in court.

Mo Shaolang chose the most beautiful and highest-born of them all: Jia Niang.

The new emperor issued an edict, giving Jia Niang to Mo Shaolang as his wife.

For her family's future and her mother's tears, Jia Niang reluctantly climbed into the bridal sedan. Mo Shaolang, delighted, entered the bridal chamber.

The next day, Jia Niang politely turned Mo Shaolang away and began living a lonely, cold life. Mo Shaolang said nothing and turned back to the battlefield.

The men across the court mocked Mo Shaolang, openly and behind his back: "A country bumpkin reaching for a swan?" The women of the capital waited to laugh at Jia Niang: "That'll teach you to think you're better than everyone, and to think you're better than me!"
