In the second semester of their first year of high school, Inarizaki’s boys’ volleyball team welcomed a new player. The new player was soft and sweet, and even spoke softly. “H-Hello, everyone... Um, I’m Tenin Sakuya, a transfer student from America. My main position is... is MB. I look forward to playing with you.” The Inarizaki players exchanged glances. They couldn’t help feeling that this transfer student seemed completely out of place in a fiery sports manga. The coach’s assistant coughed and said that to help the new player fit in, they should have an intrasquad 5-on-5 match to build camaraderie. Thirty minutes later, the new player was crying as he apologized, while the outside hitter was crying in despair on the court. The Inarizaki team fell silent. That jump, those reflexes, that technique! You’re telling us you’re an MB?! But the new player was crying with such heartfelt sincerity. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, sob... We almost lost. I really am useless. I’m so sorry.” The Inarizaki players looked at the score, then at him. They couldn’t help thinking that this new teammate was worse than the twins at heart. ** Eight years later, in the post-match interview room at the Olympics. “Hello, Tenin. First of all, congratulations on being named this year’s Best MB. Also, this is the fifth time this season you’ve made the opposing outside hitter cry on the court. What do you think about that?” Tenin Sakuya gave the camera a slightly bashful smile. “Thank you all for your support. I’ll keep working hard.” Also known as How a Natural-Born Villain of a Middle Blocker Makes the Opposing Team Cry Pairing: Suna Reading notes: 1. The timeline starts in the Miya twins’ first year of high school. At the beginning of this story, the Miya twins, Ginjima, Suna, and Sakuya are first-years; Kita Shinsuke and Ojiro Aran are second-years; and Ohira Ren is a third-year. (Ohira being a senior is my own headcanon.) 2. There are no other side pairings, and there will be no descriptions or hints of any other pairings. 3. The story is 50% everyday life and 50% matches. Characters from other anime will appear, but they won’t affect your reading experience. Theme: Work hard and surpass yourself
