In 1927, the Northeast of old China was about to face an unprecedented political crisis. The Japanese wanted to use Harbin as a fulcrum to split the Northeast and establish a puppet government. The former Soviet Union wanted to use Harbin as a front line to Northeast Asia. The Jewish community even hoped to establish a "Far East Israel" in Harbin. The Republic of China government was struggling with whether to abandon this splendid city, but the Central Government of the Communist Party of China tried its best to hold on to this little Paris city in the East.
