She traveled between Northern Yi and Great Qi, killing treacherous ministers and rescuing loyal officials, surviving one dangerous predicament after another. Through it all, one person was always by her side, serving as the shield at her back and the blade in her hand, all because of a promise he had made to her before the emperor when they were children.

"Manman, I told you that whatever you want to do, I'll do it with you."

He could never forget that jujube paste cake offered to him in the cold, gloomy palace, and Li Yang's backlit smile.

Yuan Shuyan had a headache. She simply brought the seahorse... no, the young man, to her master, and he became her master's final disciple.

She thought the days ahead would be more peaceful cultivation and training, as usual. But one day, her seahorse-spirit junior brother burst into her room, showed off the large pocket he'd sewn onto the outside of his Daoist robe, and said, "Senior Sister, I'm an adult now. I can bear baby seahorses for you."

Shushu

On the day Chen Shushu married while holding her brother's memorial tablet, Lu Qi spent the whole night drinking in his room. He couldn't understand why Chen Shushu had chosen to marry his ailing elder brother when Lu Qi had met her first. The two brothers had the same face, yet Chen Shushu would rather remain with a dying man than return his feelings.

Chen Shushu lost both her parents when she was young and had no choice but to live with her uncle's family, dependent on them at every turn. Her uncle was lecherous, and her aunt was unkind. From childhood, all she wanted was to escape that home. When she saw her aunt marry off her cousin, an illegitimate daughter, as a second wife to a wealthy man over sixty, Chen Shushu became even more certain of what she wanted.

At a banquet, she met Lu Yi, the eldest son of the Lu family. Even though she saw through his deceptive facade and knew he was near death, she was still willing to marry him. But why, as Lady Lu grew more and more fond of her, did her brother-in-law, the younger brother of her late husband, look at her in an increasingly improper way?
