I was only a little invested in the first Wandering Earth movie, but after watching the second one this year, I fell head over heels for the pairing. The more I thought about it, the more obsessed I got, so I got excited and started writing a short story. Anything that doesn't make sense is just my overactive imagination. OOC is on me. Some premises for this fanfic:
The story of Wandering Earth 1 was actually just a simulation run by MOSS, before it had connected Tu Hengyu as a human-in-the-loop. Without Tu Hengyu connected, MOSS secretly intervened as Earth passed Jupiter, causing the planetary engines to shut down and Earth's course to deviate. This led to Jupiter's gravity becoming greater than the combined thrust of all the planetary engines.
After Tu Hengyu was uploaded, however, MOSS calculated a new outcome based on the new variable. So on the day the Jupiter crisis took place in the original movie, MOSS did nothing. Humanity successfully used Jupiter's gravity to accelerate Earth, and Liu Peiqiang retired as planned, returning to Earth from the space station.
After returning to Earth, Colonel Liu Peiqiang no longer had that square-headed artificial intelligence by his side, and all the machines around him worked normally. Yet at certain moments, he still felt as if he were surrounded by some omnipresent, intangible presence, especially when he woke up groggily in the middle of the night or was drunk.
