Life may be as long as a dark room, but that doesn't stop him from writing bright spring poems.
"A listless heroine who just wants to lie flat × An optimistic ray of sunshine who went blind in a car accident"
"I know he'll never see again, but I still can't help being drawn to his eyes. They're the kind of eyes that make my heart flutter at first sight."
Their reunion was absurd.
People hurried past, cars raced by. By the roadside, Wen Ye fell in love at first sight with a blind man.
He held the cane someone had knocked out of his hand and stood silently at the side of the road. Most of his face was hidden behind sunglasses, giving nothing away. He looked gaunt and utterly alone. But the distinct bones of the hand gripping his cane, and the pale blue veins beneath his skin, hinted at his helplessness.
Wen Ye approached him and asked, "Do you need help?"
"Thank you." His voice was low and unhurried, giving away no emotion. "I've already called a friend."
The sun was bright that day, its glare blazing off the silver cane. As Wen Ye watched, her heart suddenly skipped a beat.
She never expected to see him again so soon, much less that he would be the childhood friend she'd lost touch with over the years.
The car accident took Nalan Yu's sight, as if it had drained all the warmth from his life along with it. Not a trace of his once bright, cheerful self remained. He grew ever gentler and quieter.
Though he could no longer see, his eyes held a longing that had never faded. He gazed at Wen Ye with a burning intensity. After a long pause, he said softly, "It's been a long time, my Manman."
Wen Ye had never suffered for love. Being together with Nalan Yu, and eventually falling in love, had all come naturally. Their youth had held no deep, lingering heartbreak.
That beautiful first love became a thorn in her heart after they parted. The moment she saw him again, it stirred to life, surging wildly through her veins.
Holding back the urge to cry, Wen Ye took Nalan Yu's hand and pressed it to her face.
"It's me. It's been a long time."
The sudden car accident, the impact, the blindness. When Nalan Yu was plunged into darkness, he lost all sense of direction in an instant.
Until his Manman resolutely entered his lightless world and did everything she could to lead him out.
Blood slowly trickled down, and his vision blurred. Before he lost consciousness, Nalan Yu saw the screen of the phone beside him light up.
The last thing he saw in this life was Wen Ye's smiling face.
Later, she helped him watch the sunset. The sky was ablaze with clouds that day, the buildings silhouetted between the dying sun and the clouds. Wen Ye was entranced, and without thinking, tugged at Nalan Yu, asking him to look.
When she turned around, it was the first time she clearly saw sadness on his face.
"I'm sorry..."
"I saw it. It's beautiful." Nalan Yu came back to himself and smiled. "From now on, you'll be my eyes."
Later, during another conversation, he asked Wen Ye, "Do you know what I was thinking when I lost consciousness in the accident?"
"What?"
"I'd seen you before I went blind. How lucky can I get?"
Even though his eyes could never see the light again, Nalan Yu could always picture her perfectly in his mind.
In his dark life, she was the only light he could see.
