Prosciutto's mother was a famous beauty in Sicily.
Sadly, a beauty from the slums faced the worst kind of misfortune: for a poor woman, beauty was a curse.
Fortunately, his mother met his father. Until Prosciutto turned ten, their life was a perfect fairy tale.
In the town where Prosciutto lived, there was a woman known as the Witch. She was young and beautiful, and lived in the quietest corner of the neighborhood, in the southeast. Prosciutto's home was built near her estate.
Prosciutto would never have crossed paths with the Witch, if his mother had not died in a fire.
Even now, when he closes his eyes, he can see his mother amid the raging flames, crying as she told him to run south without stopping, to the Witch's house.
At dawn, the Witch sat quietly by the fire. When she saw the filthy little boy pounding desperately on her window from outside, she merely raised her eyes a little before letting him in.
Then some men came running over with guns.
"This child has nothing to do with that family anymore. Please, spare him for my sake..." She bent down to shield Prosciutto, her smile perfectly composed.
The men still did not move.
"Is there anything you still don't understand? This child is under my protection now."
Her tone was almost a threat.
After hesitating for a while, the men finally left with their guns.
From that moment on, Prosciutto, the son of a wealthy family, lost everything and began a new life.
