Qiu Mian is the young master of a county magistrate's household. Though his mother died young, he has lived a comfortable life as a member of a gentry family. But one prison sentence for his father sends him tumbling from his privileged position.

The imperial family shows mercy, punishing only one person and sparing the Qiu family's children and servants. But with Qiu Mian the only young master left in the household, how is he supposed to get by?

With no other options, Qiu Mian's father makes what seems to be the best decision under the circumstances.

Ling Shi is a servant whom Qiu Mian personally brought home when he was young. The two grew up together, and Ling Shi is devoted to the Qiu family.

As the Qiu family falls into ruin, before being sent to prison, Qiu Mian's father betroths his only son to Ling Shi as his husband. Ling Shi swears to take good care of Qiu Mian.

But once the young master moves to the countryside, he seems oblivious to his predicament and doesn't treat the servant as his husband, still ordering him around at every turn.

Ling Shi never refuses Qiu Mian anything. He washes his clothes, cooks his meals, and even soothes him to sleep.

Qiu Mian is overjoyed and thoroughly pleased, declaring that picking up Ling Shi all those years ago was well worth it.

Until one day, Ling Shi pushes him down onto the bed. Qiu Mian's face turns bright red. "How dare you overstep your station!"

Ling Shi gazes at his little husband's rosy cheeks, finding him more and more adorable. The corner of his mouth curls into a smile as he replies:

"As your husband, it's only right that I take the top."

(The male lead has no special background. He's just an extraordinarily handsome, perfectly ordinary man.)
