Grassland Veterinarian [1960s]

“I hope I can go somewhere that respects veterinarians more!”

With that one sigh, Lin Xuejun transmigrates to the grasslands of the 1960s, where she becomes a starving, freezing young woman sent to the countryside.

Modern veterinary medicine is only just getting started in this era. A minor epidemic can kill hundreds or thousands of cattle and sheep, destroying a year’s hard work for the herders and wiping the smiles from the faces of the hospitable grassland people.

As an ordinary graduate student in animal husbandry and veterinary medicine, she is exactly the kind of rare, highly respected talent the grasslands need.

On the grasslands, Lin Xuejun...

Rides fine horses, eats mutton, has snowball fights, faces down wolf packs, and rescues all kinds of wild animals on the grasslands and in the Greater Khingan Mountains;

She leads the members of Production Team Seven in making silage, building infrastructure, digging cellars, and preventing livestock epidemics. Together, they strive to become the model brigade in the commune, with the best autumn reserves, the highest livestock sales, and the warmest homes and richest meals in winter!

Later, she writes about her life supporting the border regions and submits her articles to newspapers. A new-generation writer is born through labor.

The people, whose lives are flourishing as the country steps into spring, finally learn which hardworking and lovable herders produce the milk and meat that appear on their tables...

One step at a time, Lin Xuejun grows from a barefoot veterinarian into the Republic’s chief veterinary officer.
