Peering at the Moon

At first, Xue Jiaojiao thought she had found herself a vicious dog. He was fierce and untamed, but his rare amber-gold eyes made him a delight to keep by her side.

Much later, she realized he was a starving dog: ravenous and unrestrained, never satisfied, and terribly hard to handle. Even when she drove him far away, he would stubbornly find his way back to his master, greedily demanding his reward.

At first, everyone thought Xue Yao was nothing more than a lowly servant, with no known parents or origins, and even his name bestowed by his master. No one paid him any mind.

It was only when he raised the Xue family army's banner once more on the frontier, striking fear into the northern lands and earning a fief stretching for thousands of miles, that everyone realized he was more than just a servant.

For a long time, Xue Yao had hidden a bright moon in his heart. She appeared when he was at his lowest, becoming a ray of light that seeped into his dark world.

Yet when he gave her his whole heart, she sighed in the gentlest, most melodious voice by his ear, "You're still not strong enough," then turned away and pushed him aside, walking off to someone else without a backward glance.

Even so, he could not restrain the obsession in his heart. All his longing, greed, and delusion had sprung from her, so it was only right that she be the one to soothe them.

Everything he did was for the sake of gathering that bright moon into his arms and cupping it in his hands, so that on every dark, drowsy night, it would shine for him alone and never illuminate anyone else.
