A Broken Branch

Yu Mian grew up in a brothel, dreaming of marrying into a respectable family and living a proper life.

By a twist of fate, on the year she came of age, Gu Zhen, heir to a duke's residence, bought her as a slave.

Gu Zhen was stern and powerful. He bought her only to stop a promising student he valued from marrying a woman born in a brothel.

Yu Mian resented him for ruining her chance at a good marriage, but she couldn't afford to offend him. She had no choice but to work in his household, carefully saving enough money to buy her freedom and hoping the day would come when she could leave.

Who could have guessed that a young master visiting the estate would take an interest in her, nearly causing a scandal?

The old madam of the Gu family flew into a rage and declared that Yu Mian should be beaten to death to put an end to the matter.

The black cudgel came down before her eyes, and Yu Mian fainted in terror.

When she awoke, she was already in Gu Zhen's room.

The man who had always looked down on her, seeing her as filthy mud, gripped her chin and said:

"Want to live? Then go tell them you're carrying my child."
