The Withered Tree Meets the Moon

Basically, it's a story about a big shot who regrets his youthful arrogance for the rest of his life. "Chen Yuan, you have your pride, and so do I." In 1988, a boy transferred to the junior high school in a small town. Some said Chen Yuan had come to the countryside to lie low after something happened to his family. Others said he'd been involved in messy relationships at his old school and had to leave the city because he couldn't stay there anymore. The second rumor was ridiculous, but looking at Chen Yuan's dangerously attractive face, it seemed plausible. Cheng Yuan didn't care about any of it. Her family was poor, and she had to excel to convince her parents to let her continue studying. Every day, she did nothing but study and work in the fields. She had no interest in anything else. That was until the first monthly exam of the school year, when someone took first place away from her. The name at the top of the results list was glaringly obvious: Chen Yuan. Chen Yuan didn't know why Cheng Yuan seemed to dislike him, but he couldn't stop his eyes from finding her. He came from a glittering metropolis, so he viewed this impoverished mountain village with arrogant disdain. The only exception was Cheng Yuan. When the frail girl in her faded clothes walked through the crowd with her back straight, she looked like a proud, lonely swan. He saw in her the same pride he recognized in himself, but he would never tell a village girl that he liked her. Chen Yuan had always believed that. In those days, people expressed love carefully and discreetly. They wouldn't even dare write "I love you" or "I like you" in an anonymous love letter. One day, Cheng Yuan received an anonymous love letter. Her heart pounding, she took it home, but she never dared to open it. She hid beside the woodpile behind the house and, with trembling hands, threw the letter into the brazier. Later, Cheng Yuan guessed who had written it, but she never found out what the letter said.
