He Ling has a lifelong nemesis named Xi Shi'an.
He's a good friend of her older brother and often comes over. Maybe their fates were just incompatible from the start. The first time they met, she splashed soda all over the handsome boy's face and ruined his limited-edition shirt.
Droplets ran along his sharp jawline. Xi Shi'an glanced up coolly and smirked. "Not bad."
Then, with just a few words, he got her brother to agree not to buy her any white peach soda for the entire summer and to sign her up for two extra tutoring classes over summer break.
Eight-year-old He Ling nearly cried with rage.
From then on, she made it her mission to cause Xi Shi'an trouble.

Piling food onto Xi Shi'an's plate at meals, hoping to make him eat himself to death;

Just when she was ready to give up, a friend gave her a suggestion: "You could date him. Once he's completely hooked, dump him right away and let him taste the heartbreak of love."
He Ling thought it was a good idea. She stayed up all night learning "How to Become a Heartless Woman" online, determined to grind Xi Shi'an into the dirt.
But before she could put her plan into action, an accident made He Ling disappear completely from the circles of Beijing's elite families.

They meet again at a friend's wedding.
In a dimly lit corner, a man leans against the wall, smoking, his gaze cold as he looks over. The brash, troublesome boy from before has become a distinguished, aloof chief prosecutor, every move radiating an air of superiority and indifference.
He Ling gives him a somewhat guilty smile.
Xi Shi'an looks down, biting his cigarette, and doesn't respond. He Ling doesn't embarrass herself by trying again, and walks past him.
But as she passes, someone grabs her wrist. The touch is burning hot, and the man's hoarse voice reaches her.
"You left without saying goodbye, and now you see me without even calling me Ge."
"Which debt should I settle with you first?"

He Ling never expected to get her marriage certificate with Xi Shi'an at the civil affairs bureau on the second day after returning to the country.
After the wedding, they are both busy with their own lives and rarely see each other.
He Ling has always thought she was just Xi Shi'an's shield against his family's pressure to get married. After all, he has always hated trouble.
Better to make do with her than find a stranger.
Until one day, she has to leave on a sudden business trip, and Xi Shi'an rushes to stop her at the airport.
The man, who is usually so composed and unruffled, now has disheveled hair and red-rimmed eyes. He asks through gritted teeth, "You're leaving me again, aren't you?"
