The protagonist, Shang Yan, was adopted by his master as a child and learned Taoist arts from him. After his master's death, he meets Jiang Chuge and begins a series of transactions between the worlds of yin and yang. By chance, he meets the heroine, Xia Qiansui, and the two embark on a tragic romance. After the heroine disappears, Shang Yan takes his own life.
