Sincerity Works Miracles

Chen An has seen ghosts since he was a child. Every year on his birthday, his dad gives him a supposedly blessed family heirloom to protect him.

Three years ago, it was a plastic cup. Two years ago, a plastic vase. Last year, a plastic comb...

This year, it was a piece of jade.

Chen An was so overwhelmed that he had someone appraise it, only to confirm it was the kind of thing you wouldn't pay even ten yuan for at a street stall.

Fine, then.

But just a couple of days later, Chen An got up in the middle of the night for a drink of water and saw someone sitting where he'd put the fake jade. Long hair, ancient clothes, and a face more celestial than any immortal on TV.

Chen An immediately set up an altar for him.

From then on, he got rich overnight and reached the pinnacle of life. Scratch that, it was all fake. His luck got even worse.

He choked on food and water, got hit by a bicycle every time he crossed the street, always overpaid for groceries, and every bit of stored food went moldy.

.

Qiao Yue had slept inside the jade for two hundred years. When he awoke, a young man had set it on a table and was examining it.

A few days later, Qiao Yue regained his human form. The young man, up in the middle of the night, mistook him for a god, immediately set out an altar and offerings, and bowed to him again and again.

Qiao Yue repeatedly explained, "Worshiping me won't help."

The young man muttered, "Please make the vegetables two yuan cheaper tomorrow."

"Or get the supermarket to put eggs on sale."

Qiao Yue: "..."

·

Chen An secretly opened one eye and peeked at him, his heart pounding.

Oh no, I'm not sincere enough. I'm going to be punished.
