No one would ever guess that the aloof, noble flower on a high peak would show such a pitiful expression in front of the girl he loved.

A widespread power outage left the whole neighborhood sweltering in the summer heat. Cicadas chirped in the branches as moonlight seeped relentlessly into the darkness.

Ji Leng crouched on the ground, gazing up at Jiang Shu. He hooked his little finger around hers and rubbed it longingly, his voice so hoarse it seemed almost viscous, as if soaked in tears. "Kiss me," he said.

Jiang Shu lowered her head. Her free hand clenched her skirt, and from the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of Ji Leng's eyes.

Hurt. Longing. So easy to pity.

"Don't be afraid. Kiss me." Ji Leng spoke softly, his voice low and hoarse. His words were steeped in sincerity, so earnest they almost burned.

The moment his last syllable fell, Jiang Shu closed her eyes. Her long lashes trembled, and as if she had finally made up her mind, she curled her finger around Ji Leng's distinctively knuckled one. Leaning forward slightly, she pressed a gentle kiss to his lips.

It was over in an instant.

A soft pop.

It sounded especially clear in the sweltering summer night.
