An Island Love Poem

The bookstore at the end of Qingyu Alley has changed hands.

The neighbors say the new owner is the grandson of the former owner, Grandpa Zhou.

The day before the bookstore reopened, Song Yao made a special trip from her flower shop at the entrance of the alley to the far end, just to see what kind of person the young new owner was.

That afternoon, cicadas sang in waves. Song Yao had leaned halfway inside when the young man, head bent over a book at his desk, looked up and parted his thin lips. His words held no warmth. “We're not open today.”

Taken aback by his cold attitude, Song Yao's friendly greeting circled around in her mind before turning into: “I was just passing by, ”

“...”

“My legs hurt. Mind if I rest by your door?”

The man's fingertips paused. His gaze, sharp as a torch, turned toward her.

Song Yao froze. In an instant, she felt her heart pounding louder and louder in the heat, just like the cicadas in this midsummer.

Who in Qingyu Alley doesn't know Song Yao?

She's a young flower shop owner, warm and friendly to everyone. The old men and women within a ten-mile radius all praise her as a lovely girl, the kind they'd love to have as a daughter-in-law.

But her honeyed words don't work on Zhou Hegui.

After pursuing Zhou Hegui for a while, Song Yao lost patience. The man was impossible to win over. He didn't even appreciate the most treasured people in Qingyu Alley, so he could just grow old alone!

Then one afternoon,

Zhou Hegui couldn't sit still after seeing the woman who'd been smiling warmly at him just days before smile at someone else.

He took Song Yao by the wrist and led her back into the shop.

Leaning over, he braced both hands on the edge of the desk, trapping her in front of him.

“Song Yao, are you doing this on purpose?”

“Doing what?”

His voice was low and magnetic, restrained yet impatient. “Flirting with me.”

“Then...” Song Yao leaned toward him. Their lips were barely a centimeter apart, their breaths mingling, so close they could touch at any moment. “Are you taking the bait?”
