Director Zhou Xiangqing had some standing in the industry. She had heard about Liu Ruoxu early on, the newcomer who had burst onto the scene with good looks and impressive acting skills.

She wondered whether he was the type who won a patron's favor and stayed famous, or the type who knew how to be flexible and work the room.

When Liu Ruoxu smiled warmly and treated her with the consideration of a kindergarten teacher, Zhou Xiangqing decided he was the latter.

Later, she realized she'd been wrong. He was more devoted to her than he was to his patron.

Had she somehow become someone's sugar baby?

She sat in the dark with someone, watching a Rohmer film. The warmth of his steady breathing seemed to coax the peach blossoms into bloom. The man joked, "Director, are you going to take advantage of me?"

Zhou Xiangqing lifted an eyelid. Her gaze unconsciously shifted away from the glamorous heroine and settled on the man's shoulder beside her.

"I don't play games where I settle for an inferior substitute," she smiled.

A trace of anger colored Liu Ruoxu's lovely voice. "Director Zhou has seen the whole world, so even I'm second-rate?"

The wineglass touched the table. Bubbles swirled against its smooth inner wall, making a sound full of despair.

With her tongue loosened as if she were tipsy, she explained, "No, no. I only play a game where I give my heart once, and receive a heart once."

At a press conference, the host asked Zhou Xiangqing to describe Liu Ruoxu's screen presence as an actor.

The poised, elegant woman lowered her eyes slightly before the camera, as if lost in thought.

After a moment, she looked up, smiling with the clear, shifting grace of a begonia sprinkled with dew.

"He's a polyester fabric woven from romance: beautiful, soft, and prone to pilling."
