Synopsis
“When I first met Zhang Yang, I thought he was pretty handsome. I figured he was a shy little boy. He had a lovely smile, and he was such an idiot. And... he was someone I couldn't help feeling sorry for... I'm so glad that when I was fifteen and at my most helpless, Zhang Yang pulled me back into the light again.”
“At first, I thought Chen Xu was cold as ice. And that air of his, he was like some big shot. I remember he used to smile a lot when he was little... Later, I found out he was actually really gentle. He looked after me and knew how to cheer me up. So Chen Xu is a gentle big shot. I really hate it when Chen Xu teases me like I'm a kid. Whenever I fell asleep, he'd always say, ‘Thank you.’ He thought I didn't know. Then one time I woke up because he was making noise, and I grumbled at him, asking what he was doing. He only explained, ‘Zhang Yang saved Chen Xu...’”
[Extremely sweet, but also heartbreaking. Super sweet at first, then utterly heartbreaking.]
In their second year of junior high, Chen Xu transferred schools and, by chance, ended up in the same class as Zhang Yang. Later, Zhang Yang “lured him home.” After moving in with Zhang Yang, Chen Xu learned that Zhang Yang's parents had separated when he was young, and his father had run off with his mistress after having an affair. Zhang Yang had grown up living with his grandfather. Though it was just the two of them, they weren't poor at all. In fact, they lived quite comfortably.
Chen Xu lived at Zhang Yang's house for a year or two. Later, his parents' careers took off, and they bought him a place near Zhang Yang's home. The house was spacious, but what did that matter without his parents?
When Chen Xu hit rock bottom, Zhang Yang was always there by his side.
The year Chen Xu became an adult, a bad friend got him drunk at his coming-of-age party, and Zhang Yang took him home. In the end, Chen Xu's desire overcame his reason.
After that, their relationship took off. With their friends playing matchmaker, they officially got together.
Later, they got into the same university. Chen Xu skipped a year so he could find a good job sooner. In the year after graduating, Chen Xu passed the graduate school entrance exam and found a good job. On Zhang Yang's graduation day, Chen Xu held a bouquet and planned to put a ring on his finger. But Zhang Yang was in a car accident on his way to Chen Xu.
Chen Xu could only watch as the person he loved lay in a pool of blood.
“His life is no longer in danger, but his brain was injured. He may forget some things.”
“This time, I'll be the one to stay by your side.”
[I don't mind getting pricked. I'm willing to pick up your shattered pieces.]
Theme: What matters is not how much you give.
