When Gui Ning first transmigrated into a book, he found himself in a ruined temple.
He looked himself over. Other people transmigrated into books and became rich. Had he transmigrated into a book only to become a beggar?
This body was in terrible shape. He had a persistent high fever, and the pain in his frostbitten legs was unbearable. Most importantly, he had been given a generous dose of amnesia. Apart from remembering that he was a soul from another world, he couldn't remember anything about his past!
Gui Ning: My debuffs are all stacked up. Heaven, I'm never calling you Grandpa again.
Gui Ning leaned against the wall and tried to walk out. He couldn't just freeze to death in the temple.
Unfortunately, the next moment, a band of bandits suddenly arrived.
A single person should never stay in a temple. The ancients did not lie.
Just as he was being beaten so badly he nearly died, Gui Ning heard another voice in his mind:
"Let me teach you how to kill them."
Shen Yi said he was a great general stationed at the border. He had taken an arrow on the battlefield, blacked out, and regained consciousness inside Gui Ning's body.
He didn't know if he was dead, so Gui Ning took that body and soul and traveled over mountains and rivers to the border, to meet the young general whom everyone admired.
Once Shen Yi was successfully rescued, he brought Gui Ning into the army and kept him by his side.
Gui Ning vaguely remembered the book's setting. In the end, this famed general would be framed for treason and die unjustly.
Whether out of admiration for the soldiers or because they had once shared a body, Gui Ning decided to save Shen Yi and change his fate.
But perhaps because they had survived together, Gui Ning, a stranger far from home, found comfort in their bond, like rain after a long drought. Gradually, he began to want to lean on Shen Yi.
Unfortunately, Shen Yi felt nothing for him.
After facing blades and hardship together, they were driven apart by someone's lies.
When Shen Yi mistook him for an enemy spy and ordered his execution, Gui Ning's heart died too.
Too kind to drag anyone else down with him, he used his life to save a soldier he had never met, dying in the stranger's arms.
From the top's perspective
Shen Yi had nearly died after being set up by the enemy. When he woke, his soul was inside someone else's body. That person had saved him and returned him to his badly injured body.
Gui Ning had nowhere to go, so Shen Yi let him stay. He was curious about the young man. His appearance was ordinary, but he had bright eyes and a remarkably clever mind.
He was clever and perceptive, and sometimes even a little cute. When Shen Yi looked at him, his heart began pounding for no apparent reason.
But gradually, he and everyone else began to notice something strange.
Gui Ning had been born a beggar, yet he knew how to read, write, and debate strategy. On the battlefield, he could come up with battle plans. Away from it, he was skilled in music, chess, calligraphy, and painting.
When rumors spread through the army that Gui Ning was a spy, Shen Yi drew his sword and carved at the stone, forcefully silencing every accusation against him.
But one day, he saw Gui Ning steal the most secret map of the city defenses from the military tent.
The sword that had once protected him could now be pointed at Gui Ning.
Shen Yi's gaze was sharp as lightning. "Who are you, really?!"
