In the Soviet Union in 1986, Jiang Ruoshui was a Chinese student who had come to Moscow to study with her older brother. She was a famous delicate beauty. Though she was often ill, had a strange temper, and spoke sharply, she was so beautiful that she always had plenty of suitors, despite her bad reputation.
One of them was a blond Soviet young man. Jiang Ruoshui's brother always looked down on him as a poor boy who worked at a photo studio. Little did he know that the young man had another identity: a Soviet thief-in-law.
Jiang Ruoshui had suffered many hardships since childhood because of her humble origins. She thought she had finally found someone who truly loved her. Just as she believed she could live a happy, peaceful life, Sergei was only thinking about how to make her agree to be his mistress for the rest of her life.
The Thieves' Code:
1. A thief-in-law must renounce all relatives, including parents and siblings, and is forbidden to marry or start a family.
2. A thief-in-law may never engage in any legal work under any circumstances. His only means of support may come from crime, gambling, and the charity of other criminals.
3. A thief-in-law must have no dealings or cooperation of any kind with the government. He may not assist officials, the military, or the police in any way, and may not engage in any activity beneficial to society.
4. A thief-in-law must teach young criminals his methods and help any criminal in need.
