Synopsis:

One day, Lin Shiyue, a longtime librarian with a laid-back nature, transmigrates into the body of a poor girl in the Great Heng Dynasty.

The original Lin Yueyue was born into a family that favored sons over daughters. Her parents treated her like a burden, beating and cursing her at the slightest excuse. To pay for her worthless younger brother’s betrothal gifts, they even sold her to the fat, greasy village chief as his second wife.

Her ending: after being cursed by everyone, she was stuffed into a pig cage, tied to a rock, and sunk into a pond. A tragic end.

Lin Shiyue: ...Why did I have to start in a living hell?

Fortunately, Lin Shiyue gained a customized library System. She could pick from countless books, look up information with ease, and the more deeply she empathized with a book, the more she could bring its contents to life.

Lin Shiyue considered the library science she had studied for years, then her natural gift for empathizing with books. Calmly, she got to her feet, overturned the rotten mess of feudal traditions, punched her trashy younger brother, kicked the greedy village chief, and left the shabby little village as a seemingly powerless young woman, completing one task after another.

Lin Shiyue: I’m a slacker. I lie flat. I can’t be bothered to move. So how did I become the richest person around?

Shang Zhichuan is the heir to the prestigious Prince Jing’s household. Noble-born, aloof, and strikingly handsome, he is the ideal husband for many of the capital’s aristocratic families.

He has always looked down on Lin Shiyue’s absurd ideas, believing her methods and actions to be utterly ridiculous and even a threat to public order.

Lin Shiyue, for her part, thinks that although Shang Zhichuan is young and noble, he is unbelievably old-fashioned. He sticks to the rules and refuses to adapt, as stubborn as an octogenarian.

So he issues regulations to restrict her bookshop, and she sends people to ruin his plans. He eats, and she kicks over his bowl; she writes, and he spills ink on her work. They fight endlessly.

Then things start to get a little strange.

Lin Shiyue: ??? What is this pest’s deal? Why is he everywhere I go?

Shang Zhichuan, his face cold and the tips of his ears red, carries box after box of rare books into Lin Shiyue’s study.

“Don’t read too much into it,” he says stiffly, stumbling over his words. “I just felt sorry for you, so I picked up a few books on the street.”

Lin Shiyue looks at the priceless ancient books filling the boxes and, for once, falls silent.

Together, we’ll enjoy the books of this world and experience the worlds within them.

Lin Yiyuan ranks first in Jiang University’s School of Foreign Languages. Her GPA is unmatched, and she has won so many competition awards and scholarships that she can hardly keep count. Everyone calls her a genius.

In the eyes of the public, these two have nothing to do with each other.

That is, until a certain photo starts circulating:

There are only two people in the entire photo. The girl stands at the podium, speaking confidently. She wears an elegant, beautiful indigo dress, and her poised smile lights up her face as she explains something in a gentle, unhurried voice. The boy sits below her, upright and impossibly tender-eyed, looking up at her as he applauds softly.

Onlookers: ??? How did those two end up together?

“What should I do if my best friend and I like the same guy?”

Someone posts this question on a popular forum. The answers vary. Some say they would bravely pursue love and be honest with their friend. Others would compete fairly, while some would turn their open crush into a secret one and keep on liking him.

Among the many highly upvoted replies, one short answer gets almost no likes and is soon buried beneath the rest.

“Give up.”

Give up.

The day Lin Yiyuan discovers that her friend likes Yang Sa too, she decides to give up on her secret crush.

At the time, she doesn’t know that someone has already entered this long story of unrequited love, in that summer full of the tart sweetness of green plums and the sound of cicadas.

From then on, he quietly watches her from behind, day after day. If she occasionally turns around and offers him the faintest smile, that tiny bit of sweetness is enough to ease the ache in the heart of the male lead of this long story.
