Part 1

The Gu family's second son and the Yan family's eldest son lived very close to each other, with only one household between them. The two families had always been on good terms. They happened to be expecting babies around the same time, and thought that since they were already so close, it would be even better to become family. So they joked, "If one of us has a boy and the other a girl, we'll have them marry."

Xue Rong knew from childhood that Gu Yiheng was her betrothed, so she followed him around every day, calling him in her soft little voice, "Big Brother Puppy."

When she was seven, Xue Rong overheard her mother chatting with her aunt. She heard them say that her aunt's husband was awful, that he didn't love her at all and bullied her. She immediately burst into tears and ran to find Gu Yiheng. Grabbing his right hand tightly with her two chubby little hands, she sobbed, "Uncle is so mean! He doesn't love Aunt at all. Big Brother Puppy, you won't be like that when we're grown up, right?"

Gu Yiheng was only six, but he nodded solemnly. "Mm. I'll love Rongrong properly."

Afterward, Gu Yiheng became a doctor at a city hospital, moved into the city with Xue Rong, and made sure she ate rationed grain every day.

When the girls of Xue Rong's age in Qingxi Village heard she'd moved to the city, they were green with envy.

Note: 1. The early story takes place in the countryside, and the later story in the county town.

2. The early story is set in the 1960s, but most of the plot takes place in the 1970s.

3. This is a fictional setting, completely fictional! Don't bother trying to verify the historical details!

4. One-on-one romance, both leads have only ever been with each other, happy ending.

5. Everyday life, slow burn.
