Blurb: The Shen family was suddenly struck by a devastating fire. Shen Xingyu happened to be staying at a close friend's house that night and survived. A helpless orphan unable to support herself, she had no choice but to take her marriage contract to the capital and seek refuge with her fiancé.
Fortunately, the Gu family still honored the engagement and didn't mind that she was now an orphan who could offer them no advantage.
Shen Xingyu was very grateful.
The only thing that bothered her was her husband, Gu Xiu. He was always cold and distant. He never smiled, and they could barely exchange a single word all day.
Shen Xingyu thought perhaps that was simply his nature. She pushed aside her doubts and devoted herself to cooking and caring for Gu Xiu, looking after him so attentively that she wouldn't even let the maids help him with his shoes and socks.
Then one day, bandits attacked their pleasure boat and damaged the cabin. Shen Xingyu and Sheng Ruyue both fell into the water. She watched as Gu Xiu jumped in without hesitation, only to carry Sheng Ruyue safely to shore.
In that moment, all the details she'd overlooked came rushing through Shen Xingyu's mind.
--So it was because he didn't love her.
Her chest tightened with a sour, aching pain.
Shen Xingyu closed her eyes, dove beneath the water, and swam away.
Shen Xingyu faked her death and left early. She didn't know that the moment her figure disappeared beneath the water, Gu Xiu went mad. He jumped back in without a second thought to look for her, and would have drowned if he hadn't passed out from exhaustion and been hauled out by the servants.
Shen Xingyu escaped to another place and bought a small courtyard. She drank tea, tended flowers, and decided that this life wasn't so bad.
They met again three years later.
The usually noble, immortal-like Gu Xiu's eyes reddened at the sight of her. He couldn't bear to look away.
But Shen Xingyu had long since let go completely. "You've mistaken me for someone else, sir."
No matter how Gu Xiu stood in the cold wind and rain, she wouldn't even open a window.
No matter how desperately he pursued her, Shen Xingyu remained unmoved. Only then did Gu Xiu understand that his sweet and charming wife could also be this cruel to his heart.
A sweet and charming heroine VS an icy male lead devoted to his career.
[Note]
The male lead does not love his cousin. He rescued her first because of a misunderstanding, and there is no romance between them. He has loved only the heroine from beginning to end.
A second-chance romance about mending a broken relationship.
All classical-style poems in the story are quotations.

On top of the city wall, I fell toward my death. My husband, Lu Wen, whom I'd been married to for seven years, frantically held Shen Qingqing in his arms, hugging her close as they celebrated surviving the ordeal.
Their embrace was reflected in my eyes. Scenes from our seven years of loving marriage flashed through my mind, like a joke.
So I really was nothing but someone Lu Wen used to shield Shen Qingqing from disaster.
Of course, he had also married me for the Mu family's influence.
Seven years ago, when I married Lu Wen, he was still an insignificant prince, with no presence at all in the Cold Palace.
But he stood outside the Mu residence for three days to persuade me to marry him. After our wedding, he cared for me at every turn and never even took a concubine. Back then, I truly believed we loved and trusted each other completely.
For his sake, I willingly became entangled in the struggle for the throne. I was poisoned for him, suffering such pain that my bones trembled for seven whole days. The poison left lasting effects: my eyes often stung, and even moderately bright light made them uncomfortable.
I argued for him in front of the emperor and was punished by being made to kneel in the rain for a day and a night. My knees have hurt whenever it rains ever since.
At last, I understood that he had never loved me.
When I opened my eyes again, I was back on top of the city wall. The desperate Third Prince once more held a blade to Shen Qingqing's and my necks.
This time, I knew I couldn't count on Lu Wen.
A quarter of an hour later, I fell from the wall and died again. But this time, the pain was transferred to Lu Wen. When I opened my eyes again, time had gone back to before I was taken to the city wall.
I cut my finger with a knife. Lu Wen felt a sharp pain in his fingertip. I confirmed it again: my pain really had been transferred to Lu Wen, and only to him.
I died again and again, and every time, Lu Wen was the one who felt the pain. Each time I woke up, it was earlier than before, until I finally returned to the time before I was married.
