[A novel in the Meeting Flowers in the Mountains and Seas series]
[Lonely, impoverished Daoist with a doomed fate x demon girl beggar pretending to be deaf and mute]
[If the world were at peace, who would still pray to gods and Buddhas?]
[Where desire is absent, gods and Buddhas cannot tread.]
1.
After his master died, a barrier suddenly descended from the divine realm.
From then on, the world's spiritual veins dried up, spirits and monsters ceased to appear, and cultivating the Dao became impossible.
Dust Lantern became the last mystic in the world, spending his days shut away in the dilapidated Daoist temple his master had left him.
Later, everyone knew he had picked up a crazy girl of unknown origins, who couldn't speak and only smiled foolishly.
Having someone else keep him company at the temple wasn't so bad, and Dust Lantern gradually grew used to having her around.
2.
Wuying had a secret, something she believed was the foundation of her survival.
After crawling out of a mountain of corpses and a sea of blood, she had taken another person's identity and enjoyed Dust Lantern's protection.
She wasn't the daughter of a family massacred to the last. She was a beggar girl possessed by an evil spirit.
She had come to Dust Lantern's side in order to stay alive.
Years later, she was brought to the peak of Cang Mountain in chains, before the entire cultivation world.
As she closed her eyes and her soul faded, she glimpsed the man below the mountain, his clothes soaked in blood and his black hair turned white.
She smiled bitterly, thinking that she had to be quite something.
She had even made someone as otherworldly as an immortal fall into the dirt.
"Why did you come into my life?"
"So I could survive."
"Then... I'll protect you."
"But why did you kill me with your own hands?"
"So I could see you again."
[I was fated to endure a hundred years of loneliness before turning to ash after a thousand. Whether you came or not, I would have been just as alone. I might as well get used to it.]
Peach blossoms blaze, the mortal world burns. A white-haired man in a green robe roams the world in his cold-weather clothes.
[I hope you come galloping to take me home!]
[The hard part was never telling a lie, but keeping the illusion alive.]
[It turns out the most heartbreaking curse in this world is forgetting, and the most heartfelt blessing is to die without a place to be buried.]
