A month after Yu Wei returned to the country, she ran into Lu Chengxiao again.

At Lu Chengxiao's private villa.

The spacious hall was packed with people, celebrities and socialites from all walks of life. Lu Chengxiao stood at the center, surrounded by them, his face arrogant and unruly as he casually clinked glasses with the others.

He was the one in power, while she was a caged bird, brought there by Lu Chengxiao's friends to be humiliated.

"Xiao, this is the woman who exposed your dirt. That entertainment reporter's got some nerve!"

Lu Chengxiao always paid back every grudge. Faced with an entertainment reporter who had no connections, he was sure to humiliate her as much as possible. Everyone was waiting for a good show.

Instead, he stood up and walked over to Yu Wei. He stared down at her for a long time, then sneered. "You dared to come back?"

His tone was indifferent, but his deep voice was especially seductive.

In that instant, Yu Wei thought of seven years ago, in that shabby, damp rental apartment.

Lu Chengxiao was getting dressed. She must have lost her mind, because she wrapped an arm around his shoulder and bit him hard, drawing blood.

Back then, Lu Chengxiao had laughed, then kissed her fiercely and cursed her for not knowing when to quit. His tone had been much the same.

"I thought Mr. Lu had long forgotten what happened back then," Yu Wei said.

Silence fell.

"As it happens, I haven't. Seven years, two thousand five hundred and fifty-seven days."

Lu Chengxiao stared at her and said each word distinctly. "Yu Wei, I've counted every single day for you."

At seventeen or eighteen, Yu Wei and Lu Chengxiao were the two outcasts in their tenement building, like two stars reflected in a muddy pool, despised, humiliated, and abused.

Things are different now. Yu Wei is still in the mud, while Lu Chengxiao stands high above her, a star no one can reach.

Yu Wei's plan is simple, just like before: use him, then climb to the top.

But later, she gradually realizes that Lu Chengxiao is the one truly stuck in the mud. He's been trapped in the summer of seven years ago, and has never escaped it.

Yu Wei finds it laughable, and beyond that, feels the faintest hint of pity.
