A New Village Party Secretary

Fuyu Village has been growing melons for decades and has become a modestly famous melon-growing town. Every year, as summer gives way to autumn, melon merchants flock in from elsewhere to buy the fruit. Yet year after year, the villagers of Fuyu Village never seem to get much richer.

That spring, just as melon-planting season began, a new female village secretary was suddenly assigned to Fuyu Village. She was young, but had plenty of nerve. As soon as she took office, she declared that she would double the villagers' income. Then, with a sweeping hand, she had every melon stall the villagers had built along the roads torn down, and gathered several village officials to fence off the best plot of land in the village.

The villagers were furious. They banded together and descended on the township government in a great, cursing crowd, accusing the new female secretary of abusing her authority. The township officials immediately summoned her and told her to give the villagers an answer they could accept.

The female secretary stood on the steps and boldly retorted, “You’re always hoping to sell your melons for a good price, but you cling to old ways and refuse to innovate. So tell me, if you won’t let go of the old, how can you create anything new?” The villagers fell silent.

Later, the female secretary set about building a trading market, racked her brains to plan a melon festival, and launched a popular live-streaming campaign for her agritourism farm. Melon sales took off. The villagers' pockets filled up, and they all smiled from ear to ear, praising the female secretary for getting things done.
