Listening to the Wind

Yaruo is a child of the grasslands, kind-hearted and gentle, like the flock of lambs she tends day after day.

Lu Jin calls her Little Lamb, complaining that she asks too many questions and is too timid.

Yet he patiently teaches her to read and write, as well as culture and etiquette, and introduces her to a civilized world she has never seen.

Lu Jin is the most ill-tempered traveler she has ever met.

Even during the last few days before he leaves, he keeps asking if she wants to go see the city, like a human trafficker.

Every time, Yaruo says nothing. She stares at the low sheep pen, then, after a long while, gives a faint smile.

In pastoral regions, far too many children never leave the grasslands.

Like the wind, the grass, the free open wilderness, they are most like sheep penned in by fences.
