In all kinds of Mary Sue novels, there are always characters who excel in every way but never focus on their careers, choosing instead to compete with other characters for the male lead.
In the end, they either love without being loved in return and meet a tragic fate, or give everything up and fish a recyclable piece of trash out of the garbage.
Then, one day, these characters stopped being mere NPCs and began to develop minds of their own...

Liu Yanhuan had a rare dual spirit root, yet never focused on cultivation. Aside from following the male lead around and fussing over him, he spent his days tripping up the junior disciple the male lead liked.
While traveling down the mountain for experience, the male lead was accidentally poisoned with a deadly toxin. Upon learning there was no cure, Liu Yanhuan was about to draw the poison into himself when a strange memory surfaced in his mind.
After drawing the poison into himself, he would lose consciousness. The junior disciple would take the male lead back to the sect, and by the time the others arrived, Liu Yanhuan would be so deeply poisoned that he could never cultivate again.
Then the male lead would walk through the door holding a letter of divorce and an invitation to his wedding with the junior disciple.
Liu Yanhuan abruptly came to his senses and turned to look at the junior disciple, who was sniffling beside him.
"You go save him."
