Jiang Xuanniao is the legitimate daughter of the Duke of Xuan's household. She is as beautiful as a flower and has been betrothed to Li Jingyu since childhood.
She grew up surrounded by adoration, behaving willfully most of the time. Only in front of Li Jingyu was she meek and obedient. To win his favor, she studied needlework, read widely, and tried her best to become a virtuous, accomplished woman.
But Li Jingyu never gave her a second glance. He called her "annoying" when she recited poetry, mocked her as "vulgar" when she wore flowers, and bluntly told her she was nowhere near as good as the woman he loved.
No one knew who Li Jingyu's beloved was. The mystery was a thorn in Jiang Xuanniao's heart, pricking her from time to time.
When Jiang Xuanniao was nineteen, her family fell from grace. Her father and brothers were demoted, and the Duke of Xuan's household ceased to exist.
People sneered at and mocked Jiang Xuanniao, while Li Jingyu treated her coldly. Her heart turned to ash. She demanded that their engagement be annulled and married Li Jingyu's elder brother instead, vowing never to see him again.

When they met again at a family banquet, the tearful girl of the past had a dim look in her eyes. Her every movement was graceful and composed, and she had grown into a mature, dignified woman.
Watching Jiang Xuanniao and his elder brother cling to each other, he simply could not bring himself to call her "sister-in-law."
Later, after ascending the throne, he eagerly took Jiang Xuanniao, now a widow, into his harem.
Though he doted on her in every way, he could no longer win her heart...
