Ji Yutang, the young master of the Ji family in Qijiang, is as beautiful as a fresh lotus and delicate in health. Betrothed from childhood, he is in love with his arranged-marriage partner, Song Ran.
Ji Yutang does so much for Song Ran: he paints for him, makes him nourishing soup, writes him songs, and stays up late knitting him a scarf. Even the big black dog at the Song residence knows that Ji Yutang likes Song Ran.
But in the end, Song Ran asks to break off the engagement and books an upscale restaurant for the sake of his white moonlight.
Ji Yutang's other childhood friend, Xie Chi, is infamous for his bad temper and unruly nature. He has bullied Ji Yutang since they were children. Whenever Ji Yutang brings breakfast for Song Ran, Xie Chi simply snatches all the soup dumplings and soy milk.
Ji Yutang gets angry every time, but when he falls ill, Xie Chi is still the first to rush to the pharmacy.
Heartbroken, Ji Yutang cries his eyes out. Xie Chi, still acting as nonchalant as ever, says, "Hey, why don't you just marry me?"
Through his tears, Ji Yutang replies, "We'll get divorced in three months."
Xie Chi grits his teeth. "Fine."
But when the deadline comes, Xie Chi refuses to get divorced, no matter what.
"Tangtang, let me take another bite."
"Stop biting me."
"Come on, be good. How else are we going to annoy that dog?"

By the time Song Ran finally realizes what he's lost, he is a miserable wreck. He shows up with roses, hoping to win Ji Yutang back, only to find Xie Chi in a bathrobe with a cigarette in his mouth. Xie Chi gives him a sidelong glance, then carries Ji Yutang back inside, blocking the entire doorway.
"What do you want? Talk to me if you have something to say."
