Xu Qianqiu first met Pei Song on the coldest winter night in the past ten years.
At one in the morning, at a bus stop, stood a boy dressed all in black, a glinting stud in his ear.
The biting wind billowed his loose outerwear. His slightly long hair brushed across his face, revealing a pair of mismatched eyes.
Xu Qianqiu wrapped herself tighter in her thick down jacket and scarf.

Pei Song had been an “outcast” since childhood.
His right eye had been deep blue since birth. Ever since he could remember, everyone around him had avoided mentioning his “flaw,” and there was always someone who took issue with him.
But Pei Song was a born rebel. If he was already an “outcast,” he might as well rebel to the very end.
So, while still in middle school, Pei Song got his ears pierced and grew his hair long enough to cover his eyebrows, becoming the head teacher's special project.

It took Xu Qianqiu a long time to truly understand that love alone isn't enough to make a relationship last.
After they separated, she wondered more than once: If she and Pei Song had never crossed that line, could they still be sitting on the riverbank, talking about everything under the sun?
As friends.
They met again at the old art studio across from the school, a place full of memories. Xu Qianqiu stepped into the shabby room for what felt like the hundredth time.
She recognized the person sitting in the chair in half a second.
Another midsummer had come, and once again she met those deep-blue, sapphire-like eyes.
“Two loveless people, a pair of lonely fledglings,
For now, we'll weather the hard times.
In a sea of misery, at least we won't be alone; we once had each other to lean on.
As we weave through the crowds,
I'll hum a song by your side.
You'll never be alone.”
