Peking opera martial performer Ye Zhao transmigrates to the modern day, just as his family’s opera troupe is on the verge of collapse. His senior apprentice brother has left the school to start his own troupe, taking a number of people with him. His father, the troupe leader, has fallen ill from worry and is confined to bed, leaving behind a flock of lost lambs with no idea what to do.
To support the whole family in an era when traditional opera is out of favor, Ye Zhao joins a talent show.
As an unknown contestant, everyone assumes Ye Zhao is relying on his looks to get by. Little do they know that once they let their guard down, he will take the internet by storm with a song in an operatic style and a sword dance.
Ye Zhao’s breakout success brings him plenty of fans, but also no shortage of hostility.
So just as everyone thinks Ye Zhao is a shoo-in for the finals, he gets eliminated. Fortunately, he has already earned enough money to keep things afloat, and immediately puts it toward rebuilding the opera troupe.
Before his fans can even kick up a fuss, they realize Ye Zhao has vanished. There is no more news of him in the entertainment industry.
The talent show ends amid a chorus of complaints. Ye Zhao is like a shooting star in the entertainment world: after a brief flash of brilliance, he plunges into darkness. In an industry constantly swept up in new hot topics, he barely makes a ripple.
But some people just can’t forget him...
Rising director Xie Mingzhou has made no new work since winning the Best Director award. People say he has run out of inspiration, and in truth, he has hit a creative bottleneck. That is, until he sees Ye Zhao perform and is suddenly struck by a fleeting inspiration.
Determined to capture that spark, Xie Mingzhou searches all across Huaxia, finally finding his muse in a small opera troupe.
“Come with me. I’ll pay you ten thousand a month. Just stay by my side. You won’t have to do anything else,” Xie Mingzhou invites him.
“...” Ye Zhao doesn’t answer, giving him the same look he’d give a suspected human trafficker.
Xie Mingzhou never expected to be rejected. It’s a blow to his pride, so he decides to... move in.
After settling in, Xie Mingzhou gradually understands why Ye Zhao refuses to leave.
Fellow dream-chasers who have crossed paths in this world should lend each other a hand when they can.
And so, before long...
The entertainment industry suddenly welcomes a host of talented, good-looking young performers: martial-role actors and female warriors from the world of opera, a rising singer with an outstanding operatic style, classical dancers who handle long silk ribbons and flowing sleeves with ease... And every one of them calls the returning Ye Zhao either senior brother or junior brother!
Just as everyone wonders what school they all come from, Ye Zhao leads this group of entertainment-industry newcomers onto the news. The headline reads: “The National Opera Tournament officially begins. Opera troupes from across the country are eager to compete, with new talent emerging and the tradition carrying on.”
