Wu Rui transmigrates into a book, landing in a Sentinel-Guide novel that has been locked for the most part and abandoned mid-serial.
The good news: she is a Guide, but not the heroine or a supporting female character, just a bit-part passerby with hardly any screen time.
The bad news: she is not a healing-type Guide. Her awakened spirit form is a crow, and her ability is [Word Spirit] (but it only works for bad things, never good ones).
In the original novel, the original owner, who shares Wu Rui's name, has no parents, relatives, or friends, and every contracted Sentinel she matches with has a shorter life than the last.
After successfully matching with her ninth Sentinel, who then dies in an accident on the way to the White Tower, the original owner becomes utterly infamous in Sentinel chat groups everywhere.
Of course, it is not the good kind of fame.
When Wu Rui transmigrates, the original owner's terminal has just received several system emails from the White Tower Matching Center.
Every email begins with “We regret to inform you” and ends with “Sentinel XX has declined to match with you.”
At the time, the original owner is consumed by self-blame and self-loathing. After reading the emails, her negative emotions erupt, and so...
Wu Rui, who shares her name, arrives in the book.
After digesting the original owner's memories, Wu Rui gets a rough idea of the rules for survival in this book's world.
In the original novel, the original owner is deemed a useless Guide by the White Tower because she has no contracted Sentinel, and before long she is forcibly sent to the front lines as cannon fodder.
Determined not to follow in the original owner's footsteps, Wu Rui recalls the blurry main plot and wracks her brain to write a recruitment notice...
Ten minutes later, a blunt new post suddenly appears in the recruitment section of the White Tower's official website:
Title: Crow Guide Seeking Sentinels
Content:
1. Requirements
1) Good looks, good physique, and a tough enough constitution to stay alive (no limits on age, rank, contamination level, or anything else)
2) Good looks preferred, abs preferred, fluffy spirit forms preferred. Good cooking can also earn you an exception.
2. Salary and benefits: negotiable
3. Other perks: nine-to-five hours, five social insurances and one housing fund, weekends off, paid annual leave, regular soothing sessions, and more
Under this freshly posted recruitment notice, many Sentinels leave anonymous comments:
[Is this that unlucky Guide who kills every Sentinel she matches with?]
[Who'd be crazy enough to be a crow Guide's dog?]
[Only a dog would apply!]
Wu Rui scrolls through the comments, then glances at the inbox already stuffed with resumes just a few minutes after the post went up. She cannot help pondering:
Are there... just a tiny bit too many canine spirit-form Sentinels in this Sentinel-Guide world?
