Shihoin Chihori was the second daughter of the noble Shihoin family, famed for its "Heaven-Given Arms." Above her was a gifted elder sister, and below her was the family's only son, her little brother. By comparison, she had neither outstanding talent nor the status of a son who could carry on the family line, so she was never valued from birth.
All she had was the fair, beautiful face she inherited from her mother.
From childhood, she had to study etiquette, dance, and tea ceremony, learning to become a perfect, accomplished noble lady. Her small, delicate body was weighed down by the heavy, ornate twelve-layered kimono, like shackles binding her in place.
"Miss Chihori, do study hard," said an elder of the family, his expression pitying and false, his tone arrogant. "These are your duties as a wife after your marriage alliance."
A canary cannot escape the confines of its cage.
Until Chihori stood there, staring blankly at her dead father's coffin.
Around her, mournful cries rose in waves...
But all she knew was this:
At last, the cage that held the canary had broken.
