It is only after getting married that Wang You learns she is the ill-fated stepmother who dies young in a period novel about redemption.

A year from now, she will die at the hands of her cousin Su Qing, pregnant and disgraced!

Su Qing does it to steal Wang You's handsome, wealthy husband and clever, promising stepson, climbing up the social ladder in the process.

.

Wang You: ???

Her cousin has already stolen her parents' love, ruined her chance at the college entrance exam, and taken away her childhood sweetheart and first love.

Now, just after Wang You gets married, her cousin wants to steal her husband too?

.

Absolutely not!

Wang You follows the plot to avoid every mishap. Not only does she stay alive, she also builds a thriving little family.

Her husband, Li Shen, pampers her so much that her feet never touch the ground and she never has to lift a finger.

Her stepson, Li Yu, trusts her wholeheartedly and treats her like his own mother.

.

Su Qing can't get Wang You's husband, Li Shen, so she settles for marrying his older brother and becomes Wang You's sister-in-law.

.

From then on, the Wang You and Su Qing households become foils for each other:

While Wang You's husband works hard and makes a fortune on the tailwinds of reform and opening up, and her son studies diligently and gets into Tsinghua University,

Su Qing's husband gambles away the family home, and her stepson does so poorly that he can't even get into a vocational school.

Years later, Wang You's husband becomes the richest man in the country, and her son returns from studying abroad to become a military research officer.

Having lost everything, Su Qing yells at the elegant, beautiful Wang You, "Why do you get to live better than me? You're worse than me in every way!"

.

Su Qing doesn't even get the chance to start a fight.

Li Shen has the bodyguards stop her and says with disdain, "Unwanted riffraff don't get to talk to my wife."

Li Yu gives her a cold sidelong glance. "Anyone who dares bully my mom is my enemy!"

Su Qing breaks down.
