A Yan is one of the candidates to inherit the Demon Realm. Her succession test is to make the holy Buddhist monk Fanye fall in love with her, then cruelly abandon him and lure him into becoming a demon.
A Yan arranges for Fanye to save her, then uses repaying his kindness as an excuse to stay by his side.
She hides her identity and keeps confessing her love to Fanye.
But Fanye's clear, radiant eyes remain calm and unmoved.
A Yan loves him passionately and doesn't give up, even when he never returns her feelings.
When Fanye goes to exterminate demons, she watches nearby and claps. When he meditates, she props her face in her hands and gazes at him, mesmerized.
The two things Fanye hears most often from A Yan are:
First: "Fanye, you're so handsome."
Second: "You stinky monk, can't you look at me a little more?!"
Hundreds of years pass. Fanye treats her gently, but no differently from anyone else. His eyes hold nothing but compassion and mercy, never a trace of romantic love.
Later, chaos erupts in the Demon Realm, and A Yan has to return before completing her task.
Before she leaves, she goes to say goodbye to Fanye and confesses: "I'm actually a spy from the Demon Realm. I had another reason for getting close to you. Now I'm leaving."
To her surprise, Fanye merely says, "Until we meet again."
Back in the Demon Realm, A Yan discovers it has just been ravaged by war. All her rivals for the throne have been defeated, and the throne is vacant.
In the Demon Realm's main hall, the person who defeated all her rivals stands beside the throne, surrounded by withered golden lotuses.
The holy Buddhist monk Fanye stands atop a blooming golden lotus. For once, he smiles as he tells her, "The throne is vacant again. You should continue your succession test."
