Lan Yu transmigrates into a book, becoming a universally loathed wastrel who is obsessed with the male lead's beloved. In his pursuit of that beloved, he makes such a spectacle of himself that the whole city knows about it, giving everyone a good laugh at his expense.
He exhausts every trick and goes to great lengths, only to receive a cold, disgusted warning from his beloved: "From now on, don't ever appear in front of me again."
The noble families look down on him and want nothing to do with him.
The sons of poor families hate him too, for bringing disgrace upon the spirit of a military family.
When the rumors and insults come pouring in, not a single person in the vast capital is willing to speak up for him.
Lan Yu smiles. He doesn't care that everyone hates him. He dutifully follows the plot to the end, successfully faking his death.
But he never expected that after his death, his beloved would go mad.

Everyone says that Duan Yiqing, a brilliant scholar from a humble family, is as bright and pure as the moon. A once-in-a-century pillar of Yong, he became the Minister of Justice at a young age, the emperor's right-hand man, and the subject of praise throughout the court and city alike.
The only stain on his life was catching the eye of that wastrel and getting dragged into a mess for no reason.
Later, an imperial edict drove the universally loathed wastrel out of the capital.
Everyone cheered.
Several months later, news arrived that war had broken out in the north, and the wastrel had died amid the fighting, leaving no body behind.
When the fighting ended and the soldiers returned to the capital, the whole city rushed out to watch the spectacle. They surrounded the flimsy coffin, clapping and cheering, filled with glee.
Then they saw the usually steady and composed Minister of Justice stumbling toward it, eyes red as he shoved the coffin open and clutched the bloodstained, tattered clothes tightly to his chest.
He knelt on the ground, grief-stricken, his eyes brimming with blood-red anguish.
After that, everyone discovered that Duan Yiqing had gone mad.
There was no longer any room in his heart for the people of the realm. Day and night, he sat before the empty tomb, pleading over and over with the grave: "Little Log, I was wrong. Please come back, okay?"
*
In the sixth year after the universally loathed wastrel's death, something unbelievable happened in the capital.
The new chief minister, who had grown ever more silent and cold in recent years, abducted a young man who had just come of age in broad daylight.
His madness rivaled that of the Lan family's wastrel years ago.
"Duan Yiqing, are you sick?"
Duan Yiqing held him close, breathing in the sweet scent at his neck. Bloodshot veins of madness were suppressed in his eyes as his thin lips brushed the soft shell of his ear. He murmured, "Yes. Little Log is the medicine that can cure me."
"Get lost!"

[Blurb]
Yun Song has a nightmare.
In the dream, Prince Jin comes to ask for his hand in marriage, and he, as the Yun family's only "daughter," is chosen at first sight.
Everyone says he's lucky. A mere concubine's daughter, and now suddenly elevated to the position of principal wife.
Only he and his mother are weighed down by bitterness, unable to sleep at night.
On his wedding day, he racks his brains coming up with excuses, hoping Prince Jin won't share his bed. To his surprise, Prince Jin doesn't even set foot in his room.
It's as though he married Yun Song just to add an innocuous decoration to his household. He pays him no attention at all.
Later, Yun Song hears that Prince Jin has rebelled and slaughtered his way through the imperial palace.
Not long after, Prince Jin takes Yun Song's legitimate elder brother by the hand and brings a cup of poisoned wine before him.
"I married you only because you resemble him a little, and because you're a woman. The one I love has always been Yun Ji."
Yun Song is terrified.
No matter how he begs for mercy, the poisoned wine is still poured into his mouth, twisting through his organs in agonizing pain.
When he wakes, Yun Song is drenched in cold sweat, curled up and trembling violently. The pain of the poison burning through him is still vividly etched in his mind.
He's afraid of pain, and even more afraid of dying.
He wants to live.
So he sets his sights on the crown prince.
[Short Blurb]
Crown Prince Xue Rangchen is handsome, with striking brows and bright eyes. Refined and elegant, he is praised by everyone in Shengjing as an immortal descended from heaven.
He has also kept himself chaste and remains unmarried even at the age of twenty, making him highly sought-after and the ideal husband in the eyes of noble young ladies.
Then one day, everyone hears that at a banquet in the Minister of Rites' residence, a bewitching woman seduced the crown prince in the back garden. The two were caught in the act, tangled together in a heated room.
The crown prince's reputation plummets, and he earns a name for being lecherous.
Furious, the emperor orders the crown prince to marry the woman to restore the imperial family's dignity, and forbids him from leaving the Eastern Palace for three months.
Once the imperial decree is issued, the noble young ladies' hearts shatter.
They wish they could tear that shameless, lowborn bed-climber to pieces and rip off her shameless face!
Finally, three months later, when the ban on the Eastern Palace is lifted, the noble young ladies see the crown princess at a royal banquet. But once they get a good look at her face, their fury dies on the spot.
This... there's simply no competing with her. Truly, they can't compare.
The crown princess is breathtakingly beautiful, the most gorgeous woman in Shengjing, as lovely as a celestial maiden. No wonder she could bring the crown prince, that unattainable flower on a high peak, down to earth. With a face like hers, they would have fallen for her too.
Then they sneak a look at the crown prince.
So the crown prince doesn't dislike beautiful women after all.
He just doesn't care for ordinary women like them.
[The Seme's Perspective]
The first time Xue Rangchen sees Yun Song, Yun Song is sitting on a rock by a rock garden, hugging his knees and crying. Xue Rangchen walks past with an impassive face, mischievously tossing a pebble in his direction. The sound frightens Yun Song so badly that his sobs turn into hiccups.
The second time Xue Rangchen sees Yun Song, Yun Song is sneaking fruit cakes like a little squirrel, his cheeks puffed out as he warily watches his surroundings. His food-protecting manner makes Xue Rangchen laugh.
The third time Xue Rangchen sees Yun Song, Yun Song is glassy-eyed with drink, clinging to his sleeve and saying things that make no sense.
Xue Rangchen watches him for a long while. In a rare moment of kindness, he softens and takes Yun Song to a side room to rest.
That one act ends up placing his whole life in Yun Song's hands.
