When Lu the Cat gained intelligence, wars were raging everywhere below the mountain. The timid cat never went down the mountain.

On the day the People's Republic of China was founded, as the solemn proclamation rang out across heaven and earth, the mountain spirits and monsters all sensed the same thing: to help the nation's fortunes recover sooner, spirits could no longer cultivate by borrowing the spiritual energy of mountains and rivers, animals could no longer become spirits, and those who had gained intelligence but not taken human form could no longer do so. This ban would be lifted once the nation's fortunes recovered.

Lu the Cat, who had yet to take human form, immediately lost his motivation to cultivate. He spent his days in the mountains chasing cats and dogs and catching birds, until one careless moment led him to offend a powerful spirit.

Driven off by the powerful spirit, Lu the Cat had no choice but to go down the mountain.

At some point, an army unit had set up camp below the mountain. Company Commander Li was looking for a pet for his wife, who had recently joined him. Lu the Cat rushed straight up to him, blocked his way, and tried every trick to act cute and charming. He was taken home.

Starting with the Li family, Lu the Cat began a life of wandering from one household to another. He accompanied China through the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, all the way to the twenty-first century.
