At eighteen, Song Xingyun, the youngest daughter in her family, took over her mother's job at a textile mill and became a factory worker. Her one regret was that she would never get to attend college.
In her first year at work, her parents arranged a blind date for her. While she was getting to know her match, her childhood friend Zhuo Xinglu returned to the city from the countryside, honored as a hero for his brave deeds. Tanned dark, he declared in front of her date that he wanted to pursue her, claiming they had always been in love with each other.
Scene 1
Zhuo Xinglu glared at her blind date like a wolf guarding its food. “We're the perfect match, bound by fate and promised to each other. How could there be room for a third person?”
Song Xingyun wondered to herself: The stories of the Stone and the Tree, of gold and jade, are clearly about three people. So how could there be no room for her blind date?
Scene 2
Zhuo Xinglu asked, “Will you marry me?”
Song Xingyun said, “If I marry you, will I be able to study with you?”
When Song Xingyun was about to marry Zhuo Xinglu, everyone said his family background was bad. His father had been branded with a political label and was far away in Xinjiang. They had no one to help them, and Zhuo Xinglu was so thin and bookish that he didn't look capable of shouldering responsibility. He might be handsome, but looks couldn't put food on the table. Wouldn't she be losing out by marrying him? But as it turned out, Zhuo Xinglu could do a bit of every kind of work and handle any problem. After they married, the college entrance exams were reinstated, and they both got into university. Song Xingyun went to work for the government, and Zhuo Xinglu became a doctor. Later, his parents had their political labels removed, returned to the city, and found good jobs. Everyone was envious.
By then, everyone was saying Song Xingyun was a lucky woman who had married a good husband and gained a wonderful family by marriage.
After they married, Zhuo Xinglu was delighted that they were devoted to each other. Song Xingyun, meanwhile, sighed, “College is wonderful.”
Zhuo Xinglu sulked!
