Rain on a Winter Night

In the fourth year after Shi Yu left home, she received a call from her stepmother. Her voice was cold and distant. She said only, "Your sister doesn't want to go to school anymore. I can't handle her."

In Shi Yu's final year of high school, her parents divorced. Less than ten days later, her pregnant stepmother moved in.

Shi Yu and her younger sister had always been burdens their parents pushed back and forth between them. After the family was reconstituted, they had to tread carefully at every turn. When their father made it clear that he wouldn't continue paying for their education, Shi Yu took it upon herself to support her sister.

Now that her sister had lost interest in school, Shi Yu had no choice but to rush back overnight.

The autumn wind was bleak. The small town was still just as she remembered it: isolated and old-fashioned.

The man she hadn't seen in four years, however, had changed beyond recognition.

Dressed in expensive designer clothes, his tall, slender frame leaned against a brand-new Land Rover. His expression was cool, and he still held a grudge over being dumped. "Well, look at you, returning home in glory."
