The story takes place a thousand years in the future, in the year 3093 by Earth's calendar. Earth's resources have been exhausted, and humanity has entered an advanced civilization.
By then, Earth's average temperature has reached 45 degrees, with lows of around 20 degrees. Even the North and South Poles no longer have glaciers.
The land area has shrunk by about half, and the global population is under 500 million. Humans cannot safely go outdoors during the day without wearing protective suits made from special materials.
